Sadly, there is no escaping it, parts of your drywall will eventually take a beating over time. The good thing is drywall is sometimes easy to repair, especially when the damage occurs on the face. However, things get a bit trickier when the corners. Here’s how to best manage drywall corner repair.
Learn the Basics
If you are already familiar with fixing drywall, here is a refresher course just in case. First, assess the damage. Smaller dents and holes can be patched easily. Just clean out the damaged area, fill in with spackle, smooth out so it’s flush with the wall, and let it dry. Once it is dry, sand down and paint to conceal the repair. For bigger holes, you will need to break out a drywall patch kit and follow the instructions.
For Light Corner Damage
When it’s time to repair a corner, all of the steps mentioned above apply. Minor corner damage that only affects the paint and joint compound only needs scraping away the loosened material, applying some joint compound, letting it dry, sanding down, and painting it.
For Deeper Corner Damage
In some cases, you will often find that the corner bead, joint compound, and paint are damaged or dented. Should this be the case, you need to take a more invasive approach. First, use your saw and cut through the bead that is both above and below the damaged area, just make sure you do not cut into the wall. Then, score along the sides of your cuts so you can pry off the corner piece. From there, remove any loose compound. Measure the height of the section you just removed and cut out a new corner bead using metal snips. Apply your joint compound before installing the new corner bead, this will allow the wet mud to adhere to the bead. Apply additional compound on the repair and leave it to dry. Sand, paint, and the corner repair will be done.
